Publishing beyond state approval

Ukrainskyi visnyk, or Ukrainian Herald, appeared as samizdat in 1970–1972 and again in 1987–1989. Chornovil was its publisher and responsible editor. The archive linked below provides access to material from the periodical.

02

What does samizdat mean?

Samizdat means producing and circulating texts outside official censorship. It describes a practice, not one particular publication. A single text can be passed on; a periodical also creates continuity, allowing readers to return to an unfolding record.
