What kind of book was it?
Chornovil compiled documentary portraits of Ukrainian intellectuals repressed in 1965. The collection, Likho z rozumu, circulated abroad and became known in English as The Chornovil Papers. In November 1967, he received a three-year prison sentence.
The portrait as an argument
A portrait asks the reader to work at a human scale: to see a person’s occupation, beliefs and life. The quotation marks around “criminals” invite scrutiny of the accusation itself. They ask for comparison rather than automatic acceptance of official language.
How to read a documentary collection
Ask who is speaking, when an account was written and what can be checked independently. Keep the author’s position and the documentary evidence in view together. The links below provide historical context; the site does not present invented scans as original documents.
