24 August
On 24 August 1991, a group of members of parliament carried the Ukrainian flag into the Verkhovna Rada chamber. Viacheslav Chornovil was among them. The flag was spread across the parliamentary rostrum.
Entering the chamber and flying above it
The blue-and-yellow flag was raised above the parliament building on 4 September. That was a different event from carrying it into the chamber on independence day. Precise dating is essential to reading and captioning the photograph.
What the frame leaves out
The image preserves a gesture, not the entire political process. Read it alongside the stories of Rukh and the declaration of independence. The symbol then becomes part of a history of decisions, organisations and people.
How does knowing the date and participants change the photograph’s meaning?
